FAQ: What is a “Grandmothered” Health Plan?

Question: What is a Grandmothered Health Plan?

Answer: As you may know, any client or group who purchased a health insurance plan between March 23, 2010 and December 1, 2013 is considered grandmothered. The Affordable Care Act required those on grandmothered plans to transition to a qualified health plan (QHP) in 2017. CMS recently stated that those on a grandmothered plan may remain on the plan through December 31, 2017. Please select this link to read the CMS memo on the transition to ACA compliant policies.

Blue Cross of Idaho is working with the Idaho Department of Insurance on a transition plan for these plans. We will update you as soon as we have more information.

Finally, there are no changes to grandfathered plans.
